Behavioural Support for Obesity Prescribing (BSOP)

BSOP is a national NHS programme that provides mandatory behavioural and lifestyle support alongside obesity medications, specifically tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) prescribed in primary care.

It is part of NHS England’s approach to treating obesity as a chronic condition, combining medication with structured support rather than medication alone.

Who it’s for: Adults prescribed tirzepatide for weight management via NHS primary care.

What it provides: Behavioural, nutritional, physical activity and psychological support to help patients make sustainable lifestyle changes.

Programme length: Typically 9 months.

Referral route: Referral is made by the prescribing clinician (usually the GP practice) as part of the obesity medication pathway.

BSOP Pilot

NHS England is currently undertaking a pilot with practices and providers to make efficiencies to the referral process and to improve data quality and flow.

To find out if you are a participating site please see:

An overview of the pilot scheme referral process is explained in the video below:

For organisations participating in the pilot, the referral form is shared via the national resources publishing group – If you have already requested access to this group and activated the agreement in EMIS data sharing manager, then no further action is needed and you can find the referral form in your system as shown below:
