Behavioural Support for Obesity Prescribing (BSOP)

BSOP is a national NHS programme that provides mandatory behavioural and lifestyle support alongside obesity medications, specifically tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) prescribed in primary care.

It is part of NHS England’s approach to treating obesity as a chronic condition combining medication with structured support rather than medication alone.

Who it’s for: Adults prescribed tirzepatide for weight management via NHS primary care

What it provides: Behavioural, nutritional, physical activity and psychological support to help patients make sustainable lifestyle changes

Programme length: Typically 9 months

Referral route: Referral is made by the prescribing clinician (usually the GP practice) as part of the obesity medication pathway.

BSOP Pilot

NHS England is currently undertaking a pilot with practices and providers to make efficiencies to the referral process and to improve data quality and flow.
