Introduction and background information
Body Mass Index (BMI) is an established and widely used screening tool to assist with monitoring and managing weight related risks for people living with long term conditions. National guidance recognises the benefits of recording accurate and contemporaneous BMI measurements in routine primary care for the early identification of obesity related complications and in supporting timely, tailored interventions.
NICE Indicator IND320, sets out a clear expectation that patients with a wide range of long term conditions — including coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, COPD, heart failure, and severe mental illness should have a BMI recorded within the preceding 12 months.
Accurate and timely recording of BMI data in the general population supports population health management, optimising clinical outcomes and enabling more equitable healthcare across patient groups.
Why the Alerts Are Needed
Inconsistent or patient cohort targeted recording of BMI measurements has created gaps in BMI data at population level reporting. These can limit opportunities for weight management and timely preventative health and lifestyle interventions.
Data quality issues can also impact the reliability or availability of BMI data:
- Outdated BMI measurements.
- Errors in units of measure for height or weight.
- Missing or non-coded BMI data.
Incomplete or inaccurate data presents a clinical and population health risk.
About the BMI Data Capture Alerts
The BMI Data Capture Alerts are designed to:
- Prompt the recording of up-to-date BMI measurements.
- Improve the completeness and accuracy of BMI data - prompt where a BMI value is missing or likely to be an erroneous value.
- Support NICE IND320 expectations.
- Support delivery of QOF 2026-27 Obesity indicators.
- Enhance population-level reporting and case-finding.
- Enhance appropriateness of Weight Management referrals.
